And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.” – Mark 3:31-35
3 THOUGHTS ON FAMILY
1. A CHRISTIAN HAS TWO FAMILIES
2. OUR BIRTH FAMILY DOESN’T COME FIRST
“Parents want their kids’ approval, a reversal of the past ideal, of children striving for their parent’s approval.” – Elizabeth Colbert
We have a culture that worships at the altar of family.
3. OUR SPIRITUAL FAMILY SHOULD COME FIRST
Does your spiritual family have the necessary emphasis that Jesus demands?
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” – Luke 14:26-27
“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” – Matthew 10:37
GOD DOESN’T WANT US TO WITHHOLD ANYTHING FROM HIM…INCLUDING YOUR FAMILY
IF YOU TREAT YOUR BIRTH FAMILY THE SAME WAY YOU TREAT YOUR SPIRITUAL FAMILY, WOULD YOUR BIRTH FAMILY BE HEALTHY?
