Legalism Doesn’t Produce Godliness // Blueprints For Building The Church

1 Timothy 4:1-10

4 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

Legalism and False Teaching:

Legalism:  Any attempt to help God out with extra rules and regulations.

1 Timothy 4:1-3.

…some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

False Teaching:  Lying Spirits/Teachings of Demons

  • It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as it is sincere (John 14:6)
  • Believe in yourself (Acts 16:31)
  • If it feels good do it (Luke 9:23)
  • God helps those who help themselves (Matthew 16:24
  • God wants me to be happy (Romans 8:28, 1 Peter 1:15)
  • We are all God’s children (1 John 3:10)

Training For Godliness “Toiling and Striving”:

  • Personal godliness
  • Others to know Christ

If following Christ has been easy or you, you may need to question whether you are truly following Christ!

Word of God:

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Hebrews 5:14

14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Spiritual Discipline and Self Control:

1 Corinthians 9:24-25

14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

2 Timothy 1:7

for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Jesus died for everyone, but not every one will believe
